I’m creating a book collating stories about libraries.
I’m finding it difficult to explain to people just how important these buildings are to our communities. I felt the best way to do this is to find real slice of life stories that really show how small moments at the library can have a huge impact on our lives.
For me personally, after a highly stressful pregnancy and struggles with my mobility, the library provided somewhere to be with my son for 30 minutes a week. No matter what we turned up to sing along for those thirty minutes. A year later my son has learned to walk and talk with his peer group, my reading habit is back in action and we’re doing everything we can to keep this community alive. I’m still not very mobile and I can’t always help put the tables back where they belong but our health and wellbeing is dramatically improved from this one little slot in our week. The library helped us at a crucial time without doing anything more than it normally does. We want to make sure that resource sticks around to help others.
If you have a story to share about working in a library, visiting a library or even just memories of a library, please do get in touch.
The purpose of this book is to demonstrate the need and value that libraries bring to our communities and to provide an on topic fundraiser that libraries – all libraries – may distribute and sell in the way that best suits their model.
I am a writer of around 15 years and I will enlist help from beta readers, editing and proofreading volunteers as and when needed.
We may edit stories for brevity and privacy and we may opt not to use anything that we feel is too personal or identifying without the full consent of everyone involved. If you would like your library or any people specifically mentioned by name please state this clearly so that we may discuss the details.
